Jeffrey, this is exactly the kind of statement North of Polite believes deserves scrutiny, regardless of who makes it or which side of the political debate it supports. There are three separate claims here, and they should not be presented as though they are one established fact. First, saying Prime Minister Mark Carney is “deliberately destroying Canada’s trading relationship with the United States” assigns motive. Canadians are perfectly entitled to argue that Carney’s trade strategy is misguided, too aggressive, too expensive or ineffective. We intend to scrutinize those questions ourselves. But disagreement with a policy does not establish deliberate destruction. Second, the phrase “on behalf of China” is a much more serious allegation. Canada has openly pursued greater trade with China as part of a broader effort to diversify Canadian markets. That policy can—and should—be debated. There are legitimate economic and national-security questions surrounding Canada’s relationship with Beijing. But expanding trade with China is not evidence that Canada’s prime minister is deliberately damaging relations with Washington on China’s behalf. If there is credible evidence establishing that connection, show it. We will examine it fairly. If there isn’t, it should not be stated as fact. Third, Alberta independence is a legitimate political position Canadians and Albertans are free to advocate. But the conclusion that Alberta therefore “needs to get out of Canada” doesn’t follow automatically from the allegations preceding it. An independent Alberta would still have to negotiate its relationships with Canada and the United States while confronting questions involving trade, borders, debt, currency, market access, constitutional law and Indigenous and treaty rights. Independence would not come with a guarantee from Washington that Alberta would receive preferential treatment.North of Polite isn’t asking anyone to support Carney. We’re asking for something much simpler:Make the argument. Show the evidence. Separate fact from opinion. If Carney’s policies are failing Canada, demonstrate it. If his government is acting “on behalf of China,” produce credible evidence for that allegation.Political rhetoric doesn’t become fact because it’s written in capital letters. That’s the standard we’ll apply to Carney, Poilievre, Alberta separatists, federalists—and ourselves.Facts first. Conclusions second.© 2026 North of Polite. Original reporting, analysis and commentary. All rights reserved. 🍁
